Museum
Regium (1689-1726)
Four printed catalogues of the collection were produced
- the Museum Regium suite - written in Latin. In 1687
King Christian V (ruled 1670-99) had instructed Holger
Jacobæus (1650-1701), physician and Professor
of History and Geography, to draw up a complete catalogue
of the Kunstkammer collection.
His
hand-written inventory appeared in 1689, and came
to serve as the basis for Museum Regium. It was the
first catalogue produced after the transfer of the
collection from the Castle to the Kunstkammer building.
The
first printed edition of Museum Regium was published
in 1696, and included a number of illustrations. A
supplementary volume appeared in 1699, while a new
enlarged edition with several new illustrations was
published in 1710. Johannes Laverentzen (c.1648-1729),
the royal printer - and author of historical and numismatic
works - was responsible for this edition. The series
concluded in 1726 with an index.
The
intention with the Museum Regium was to acquaint the
princes and scholars of Europe with the collections
of the Danish monarch, and thereby vindicate Denmark's
reputation as a European cultural centre.
