Curators
/ Superintendents at the Kunstkammer
The
Professor of Eloquence, Bertel Bartholin (1614-90),
was apparently the first superintendent of the Kunstkammer.
During the reign of Frederik III he was employed as
'Royal Antiquarian', and it was probably his retirement
which led to the king instructing Willum Worm (1633-1704)
- a son of Ole Worm - to survey the collection and
draw up an inventory. (If such an inventory was ever
produced, it does not exist today).
The
next 'curator of the kunstkammer' to appear is Karel
van Mander III (c.1609-70). The title appears to have
been conferred on him around New Year 1670 - a few
months before his death. Subsequently Willum Worm
was once more directed to go through the Kunstkammer,
and nobleman of the Royal Court, Hans Ahrenfeld Nielsøn
(1633-1702) took on the position of curator.
He
held the post until 1674, when Willum Worm, who had
been appointed Royal Librarian in 1671, took over
the responsibilities of the Kunstkammer's curator.
This supervisory position seems to have been abolished
shortly thereafter, since there is no evidence of
Willum Worm ever having received the appointment officially.
